Are you trying to get rid of all your credit card debt and not quite sure how to go about it? There are several ways to eliminate your debt, some may be pretty drastic so you need to make sure you are making an informed decision.
My husband and I were like most Americans had a little too much credit card debt. It was at a time that the interest rates on mortgages was pretty low so we decided to refinance our home to a lower interest rate and to pull a little equity out of our home to pay off all of our debt. Before we did this we made sure we were not pulling too much of our equity out and making a whole new problem for ourselves. We then made a conscious decision to not use our credit card ever again so that we wouldn’t get in the same predicament. This might not work for everyone but it has worked for us.
Owning a home has many perks and another example that would have worked for us was a home equity loan. If you qualify for one you can take out a home equity loan at a lower interest rate to pay off your credit cards.
If your debt is so substantial that you can’t get any type of loan to eliminate your credit card debt, as a last resort you can file for bankruptcy. This should only be considered as your last possible choice because it will negatively impact your credit.
If you do not own a home or you don’t want to file for bankruptcy there is still some help for you out there. There are debt management services or debt consolidators who can sit down with you and help you decide what will work best for you. They may be able to call your credit card companies and help you negotiate a lower interest rate. Some of these companies are also non-profit organizations and you may qualify for them based on your credit ratings.
Remember, don’t be discouraged. You have several different options out there. With a little research you can find the right program that will fit your needs and not hurt your credit score.
